Teaching the Edit-a-thon

In this Tech Tuesday session, Drs. Emily Goodman and Kerri Hauman reviewed the history of the Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon, which was created by an artistic collaborative that had noticed the lack of in depth information about women, people of color, trans, and non-binary people on Wikipedia. This group formed the Edit-a-thon in an attempt to address this issue and to elevate the voices and histories of marginalized groups.

At Transylvania, Drs. Goodman and Hauman have been leading Edit-a-thons with their and other classes since the 2016-2017 academic year. In preparing students and fellow faculty for the edit-a-thon, Goodman and Hauman note the ways that participating in the edit-a-thon serves as a valuable teaching tool. In learning about and doing the edit-a-thon, students learn about problems of objectivity, the need for good sources, issues with citation and copyright, and basic web design skills.

The Transylvania Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon will take place in the campus library on March 4, 2023. It is open to the public, but all participants must wear masks to ensure the safety of those in the space.
